Weight loss in lock down!

Although the UK lock down carries on for now, as the vaccine roll out continues apace we have reason to hope that some restrictions will start to ease. While an exciting thought, this also has many people looking at how much weight has been gained through lock down, as home schooling, home working and general boredom took their toll.

People may wish to slim down before going back to offices or (fingers crossed) a few days away from home. Being overweight also brings risks of heart problems, high blood pressure and worse outcomes if infected with viruses like flu and Covid. For many of these people dieting alone will not offer a quick enough drop in body weight for their expectations, which can be disheartening and lead to “giving up” on achieving a healthy weight.

We all know the general rule – calories taken in need to be less than calories expended, this will cause weight loss but can be slow, as eating a varied diet is unlikely to cause a large enough calorie deficit to allow fast weight loss. This is where science can help speed things along! For those struggling with weight loss, booking a consultation with our pharmacist in our private weight loss clinic can help. We can offer a range of medicines that can help. Methylcellulose can be used to fill the stomach before meals, so that you feel fuller quicker. Orlistat blocks enzymes in the gut that allow fat absorption, so less fat is taken into the body from each meal.

Lipotrim is a complete meal replacement (and the fastest way to lose weight safely) that can allow on average a stone in body weight lost in the first 4 weeks. The newest medicine on the block is Liraglutide – a daily injection that suppresses appetite, helps with satiety and can help overcome issues of insulin resistance in those who are heavily overweight. This medicine is ONLY available on prescription – if you see this for sale on the internet without the involvement of a prescriber, please be wary as you may not always receive genuine, safe medication.

Our prescribing pharmacist can discuss options with you in consultation and help you choose the best plan for you. Please call us on 01254 875008 for an appointment or further advice.
